Sauron

Dark and terrible was he
Who came across the sea
From Valinor, were lived the Ainur,
To Middle Earth to serve his master, Melkor.

But the Great Enemy’s power did not last,
And his soul from the world passed.
So Sauron deceived and lied
And created nineteen rings to abide.

He gave these rings to the races of Middle Earth.
Three to the Elven Kings of first birth.
Seven to the Dwarven Lords, lovers of stone and jewel.
Nine to the Men of Mortal life, who became for Sauron a tool.

For these he created a master ring,
The One Ring of which the elves sing.
But in that instant they became aware
Of what had happened in the darkness there.

And so it was that elves and men traveled to Mordor
To Orodruin at the Dark Land’s core.
They fought the host of Barad-dur
And threw down Sauron as Melkor before.

But his soul remained,
And form he soon gained.
He created Dol Guldur in Mirkwood
To seek out his ring where he could.

In time he returned to his dark tower,
But he could not reclaim the One Ring of Power.
In the Shire it was hid from sight,
And the Nine of Minas Morgul now took flight.

The ring left still unfound.
Through Moria and Lorien, to Mordor it was bound.
The fellowship broke and battles were fought.
Still the ring Sauron sought.

And when at last a great army came to the Black Gate,
Two hobbits came to Orodruin after much debate.
They saw there Gollum as they glanced.
He took the ring, and then he danced.

And in that moment, the Great Eye saw all,
Gollum had taken to fall.
Into the flames of Mount Doom he went.
The power of Sauron had been spent.

Barad-dur went crashing into the land.
At last, Sauron was in Mandos’ hand.
And so it was as the elf sings,
Ended the life of the Lord of the Rings.
